Remembering Helen Wootton

The Wendell Historical Society hosted “Remembering Helen Wootton,” an exhibit showcasing her art and honoring her life on the 125th anniversary of her birth. The event at the Historic Wendell Post Office on Saturday, May 13, 2017 coincided with Wendell’s annual Spring Fling, Art Walk, and Corvette and Classic Car Show.
“Miss Helen” (shown in photo at left) was a second-grade teacher who taught several generations of students at Wendell School before retiring in 1958. After retirement, which was before the days of public kindergarten, she operated a kindergarten in her home.
As an artist, she produced works that earned awards, were displayed at a gallery, and were given to family and friends as cherished keepsakes, often marking the birth of a baby or other milestones.
In 1967, she was recognized by Wendell United Methodist Church for completing 51 continuous years as a Sunday School teacher in Wendell and earlier in two other communities before her family moved to Wendell in 1920.
“Miss Helen” was born May 12, 1892, and died Aug. 7, 1977, at the age of 85.
