Reunion Brings Together Former Wendell High Students

About 175 former Wendell High School students, some traveling from as far away as Georgia, gathered Oct. 8 for an all-class reunion, sponsored by the Wendell Historical Society.  The luncheon reunion was held in the fellowship hall of Wendell Baptist Church.

Wendell High School closed its doors in 1965 when Wendell students joined those from Knightdale and Rolesville at the new Vaiden Whitley High School, later named East Wake High School.

The program got off to a rousing start with 11 former cheerleaders performing cheers under the direction of Anitra Todd of Raleigh, Class of 1964.

Annie Sue Mattox Faison, Class of 1942, was an honored guest, as were former elementary teachers Claudia Jackson and Aileen Lovelace, both of Knightdale.  Ollie Baker, Class of 1954, was recognized as reunion honorary chairman.

Ginna Gray, Wendell mayor, presented a town resolution recognizing Oct. 8 as Wendell High School Day in Wendell.  Master of ceremonies was Paul White, Class of 1964, Wendell Historical Society board member.  Lucille Satterwhite Strickland of Knightdale, Class of 1965, remembered veterans and deceased classmates with special mention of Richard Sykes, Class of 1962, and George Causby of Raleigh, former principal, who recently died.
